Those who have a family member with autism and those who know of people who deal with autism in their families use the puzzle piece as a symbol of being aware; aware of the challenges that come autism. It limits a persons ability to live a whole life, but those who know are sure that even though one may suffer from autism, it doesn't mean their life can't be rich and rewarding.
People may have part of a puzzle on their clothing, on their handbag, or in the form of jewelry; on their ears, necklaces, or bracelets. The wearing of the puzzle piece for autism awareness can be compared to ancient times when Christians had a secret symbol of their belief. It was at a time when Christians were persecuted; therefore believers had a secret symbol they could flash to find out if another is a believer.
Those who wear the puzzle piece feel an instant kinship for another person they find who is wearing the same symbol. It is an instant bond of brotherhood; even if they have never met before. It immediately means trust and common trials; an understanding that only the wearers have. A symbol such as this brings comfort and hope to those who wear it. It's as if they have a secret that no one else does. Though they may have a loved one who suffers from the affects of autism, they hold their thoughts and challenges dear to their hearts in the form of their symbol; maybe in the form of a puzzle piece necklace.
