It's safe to say that most of us wouldn't mind being the owner of a particularly large diamond, or famous piece of gold jewellery, famed for its weight, worth and craftsmanship. So who are those lucky people who own some of the world's most famous jewellery and why are these items so well known?
1. Heart of the Ocean
Possibly one of the most famous and notorious necklaces in the world, this piece of jewellery become internationally well known after it appeared in the film 'Titanic'. Originally based on the Hope Diamond the necklace has an extremely large heart shaped sapphire surrounded by a diamond frame and diamond necklace. Although the 'Heart of the Ocean' is a piece of jewellery that is extremely famous we should remember that this is in fact a fictitious item invent from some historical context and used within Titanic documentaries and the film. The diamond in which it is based on, the Hope Diamond is just as, if not more interesting and shrouded in mystery than the Heart of the Ocean.
2. Hope Diamond
The Hope Diamond is a deep blue 45 carat diamond weighing over nine grams. Currently housed in a Washington Museum the diamond is famous for supposedly being cursed and bringing bad luck to its numerous owners. The Hope Diamond is said to be stolen from the eye of a religious statue and is thought to have been a lot bigger originally, but due to the necessity to smuggle the diamond across several countries it was reshaped, losing some of its huge size. So as you can see it's often not only the beauty or size of a piece of jewellery that makes it interesting but the story and history behind the piece.
3. Indian Gold
India is famous for not only one specific piece of gold jewellery but for its production of breathtaking and captivating gold jewellery, they sell gold items such as bracelets and rings around the world. Often crafted in 22 carat gold, only 2 carat less than pure gold, 22 carat gold is often the purest form used for making jewellery and is renowned for its somewhat yellow hue.
4. Crown Jewels
Large proportions of the crown jewels are made from gold and precious stones and are stored at The Tower of London, after they were stolen from Westminster Abbey. They are kept in the Jewel House and protected by armed guards at all times.
It's always interesting to discover the history surrounding ancient pieces of jewellery and as you can see from the examples above you will often find that they are shrouded in mystery and have a colourful history. So why not take a look a little closer at what you may have once thought of as scrap gold or possibly through some research and digging you may discover that you're the owner of a long lost relic and could get some cash for gold you have previously thought was worthless.
